Somewhere over the ocean…

April 18, 2012 in Film

 -Review-

Fast cars, fast money, fast women…but still no love for Sophia Coppola’s main character Johnny Marco played by Stephen Dorff in Somewhere.  Dialogue is replaced with the sound of the Ferrari 360 Modena which adds an extra emotional element to the film by cruising at limiting speeds throughout the film even though it’s capable of so much more just like the main character’s potential in life.

Drive…but where?

April 18, 2012 in Film

-Review-

Awesome soundtrack…I couldnt help but shazaam each song that played.  Some cool driving scenes but slow at times with awkward moments of silence and staring contests and then stab matches where everyone tries to kill one another….all in all the score and cinematography made this film.

Midnight in Paris

March 22, 2012 in Film

-Review-

I love Paris in the springtime.
I love Paris in the fall.
I love Paris in the winter when it drizzles,
I love Paris in the summer when it sizzles.
Finally got around to catching up with Woody’s last flick Midnight in Paris which was long overdue.  In Allenesque fashion he has thrown Owen WIlson into playing the beatdown Hollywood screenwriter who is trying to live out his babyhood dreams of being a literary icon.  After a few twists and turns with the Gatsbys, Mr. Hemingway, and the stunning Adriana played by Marion Cotillard, he realizes that where he is presently isn’t true or as a convincing Hemingway played by Corey Stoll puts it..”No subject is terrible if the story is true, if the prose is clean and honest, and if it affirms courage and grace under pressure.”  His world with fiance Rachel McAdams and her materialistic parents and snobby know it all friends provides more impetus for this escape.  This idea that the past is always better than the present theme mixed within this light but sticky flick leaves us  wondering if we really should be focusing on the present instead of the past?

Oscar 2012 Predictions: Who Will Win?

February 26, 2012 in Film

For best picture it’s the silent but deadly, black and white flick…oddsmakers say The Artist will take home the gold paper weight with a 20:1 chance…and I think they’re right!  That’s a lotta juice up front!

Aronofsky’s Black Swan

November 21, 2010 in Film

-Review-

It all started out with the NYC underground hit Pi.  You would walk around the city and see the symbol for Pi on every other sidewalk and lamp post for miles across the island.  Then came the twisted flick Requiem for a Dream a fascinating look at human addictive behaviors and growing dependencies on the vices that surround us all.  And then came along the award winning film The Wrestler the epitome of art imitating the real life rise and fall of Mickey Rourke.  Now Aronofsky returns with what seems to be a fantastic psychological horror thriller whatever you wanna call it fascinating exploration of the mind and body.  First lets take a look at the female cast…Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder!!!  Tasteful to say the least…and the french dude Vincent Cassel who is married to Monica Bellucci and you might remember next to George Clooney in Oceans Twelve has done some amazing work over the years.  The countdown has already begun with the opening to be Dec 1st…….I can’t wait.

A Social Network – Cocktails and Dreams

October 17, 2010 in Film

-REVIEW-

“A million dollars isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? A billion dollars.” This excerpt from the film when Sean Parker persuades Mark Zuckerburg that this idea of his really is the next big thing pretty much sums up the movie.  Go big or go home.  In another excerpt from the film Mark replies to his accusers, “If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you’d have invented Facebook.” That should be enough to get everyone off Zuckerburg’s back, but as we know all too well people continue to fight for what they feel is their share of the fortune.  Rightly so take what is yours and then some.  This film has brilliant dialogue and a story that will keep the world wondering whether or not this is really how things went down.

INCEPTION – This isn’t a dream…this is the real thing!

July 18, 2010 in Film

-REVIEW-

This film reminded me of what it was like to build a sand castle as a kid with no boundaries.  On a beach as a kid there was boundless potential as the architect to create whatever your heart desired where the only limitation was your own imagination.  Inception builds sand castles with intertwining layers where we enter a world that we are never quite sure is real even up to the end.  There are dreams within dreams within other dreams where we have the ability to share dreams and crack into the subconscious of others and steal their darkest secrets or plant completely new ideas.  This might all sound super convoluted and that the film probably has a messy plot that no one can understand (which many critics and reviews have harped on about including the wsj) but I completely disagree. I’ve been a huge fan of Christopher Nolan’s previous works such as Memento, The Prestige and The Dark Knight all of which were executed very well but I must say I wasn’t so sure he could pull this one off.  It is very rare that such a complex concept can be pulled off so masterfully on screen.  Sure if you’re someone who only watches The Hills or Jersey Shore you probably aren’t going to follow whats going in this film or in much of the world for that matter.   So I take my hat off to Christopher Nolan, twice….no three times…he surprises yet again with an organic artistry that seeks the genuine truth and strikes at the emotional core of what makes us human beings.
